E4
Description:
The E4 optical kit encoder is a miniature non-contacting rotary to digital position feedback device. This reflective encoder is designed to easily mount to and dismount from an existing shaft. The internal monolithic electronic module converts the real-time shaft angle, speed, and direction into TTL-compatible outputs. Simplicity and low cost make the E4 ideal for both high and low volume motion control applications. Its tiny size makes it an ideal choice for small DC motors. The reflective sensor incorporates an LED light source and a monolithic photo detector with signal shaping electronics to produce the two channel bounceless quadrature TTL outputs. The hub of the encoder wheel is available for installation onto shafts from .059" to .197" (1.5mm to 5mm) in diameter. Standard diameters are stocked. A quick turn around time is offered on many special order diameters. The base provides mounting holes for two 3-48 x 1/4" screws on a .586" bolt circle. When mounting holes are not available, a pre-applied transfer adhesive (with peel-off backing) is available for "stick-on" mounting. The cover is easily snapped onto the base. It is embossed with the connector pin-out. The E4 can be connected by using a high retention 4 conductor snap-in polarized 1.25mm pitch connector. The mating connector is polarized and should attach smoothly to the encoder; do not force. See the third page of this data sheet for Cables & Connectors.

Installation Note: Connector is polarized and should attach smoothly to the encoder, do not force.
Note: A leads B for clockwise shaft rotation, and B leads A for counterclockwise shaft rotation viewed from the cover/label side of the encoder.
CPR (N): The number of Cycles Per Revolution. One Shaft Rotation: 360 mechanical degrees, N cycles. One Electrical Degree (°e): 1/360 of one cycle One Cycle (C): 360 electrical degrees (°e). Each cycle can be decoded into 1 or 4 codes, referred to as X1 or X4 resolution multiplication. Symmetry: A measure of the relationship between (X) and (Y) in electrical degrees, nominally 180°e. Quadrature (Z): The phase lag or lead between channels A & B in electrical degrees, nominally 90°e. Cycle Error: An indication of cycle uniformity. The difference between an observed shaft angle which gives rise to one electrical cycle, and the nominal angular increment of 1/N of a revolution.

Accessories:
Centering Tool: This reusable tool provides a simple method for accurately centering the E4 base to the shaft. It is recommended in the following situations:
Ø When using the T-option transfer adhesive. Ø When the position of the mounting holes is in question.
Instructions: When mounting the encoder base, slide centering tool onto shaft, insert centering tool into shaft hole of the base and slide down onto mounting surface (see figure 1 of assembly instructions). Tighten mounting screws and remove the centering tool. Hex Tools: HEXD-3404 Price: $5.00 Hex driver, .050" flat-to-flat for 3-48 set screw. HEXW-349 Price: $0.50 Hex wrench, .050" flat-to-flat for 3-48 set screw.
Note: At least one spacer tool and one hex driver/wrench is included with each order.
Spacer Tool: SPACER- 4 2 1 6 Price: $0.50 .070" thickness, round.
Transfer Adhesive:
When mounting holes are not available, a pre-applied transfer adhesive (with peel-off backing) is available for "stick-on" mounting. Use the centering tool (above) to position the base. T-option specifies transfer adhesive. Instructions: Peel off paper backing, slip centering tool into center hole of base, insert shaft into hole of centering tool and slide base and centering tool down onto mounting surface (see figure 1 of assembly instructions). Press to form a good bond, then slip tool off and continue with standard mounting instructions. A centering tool is highly recommended when using transfer adhesive.
Encoder Pin-out:
Pin 1 2 3 4 Description +5VDC power A channel Ground B channel
Low Power Strobe:
To reduce the average power requirements, the L-option version of the E4 power can be strobed on just long enough to sample outputs A and B. This option is the same as our standard E4, except the internal power bypass capacitor is not installed. The outputs settling time is typically 200 to 400 nano seconds after power up. The minimum sample frequency must be less than the maximum RPM X the CPR / 10.
