Infineon, JDS, Nortel, and others announce spec for 10-Gbit/s devices
Semiconductor Business News
(09/01/00, 01:53:44 PM EDT) MUNICH, Germany-- A group led by Infineon, JDS Uniphase, Nortel, and others here today announced that they will develop a common transponder chip and module technology for 10-Gbit/s (OC-192) bandwidth applications. The companies announced a Multiple Source Agreement (MSA) for a common, small-footprint transponder chip and module technology that would drive down the costs and accelerate the development of high-speed fiber-optic networks. Leading the charge in this effort includes Infineon Technologies AG, JDS Uniphase Corp., Nortel Networks, and LightLogic Inc. In fact, LightLogic announced the first shipment of these devices (see Sept. 1 story ). The new MSA agreement specifies a 200-pin connector and an electrical interface compliant with Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) specifications. The transponder is a module-level product featuring an integrated clock and data recovery (CDR) and mux/demux chip functions, which supports 16 electrical parallel (16:1) LVDS (Low Voltage-Differential Signal) channels at 622-Mbit/s. Measuring only 75- x 42-mm x 16-mm, the OC-192 transponders are said to provide a serial 10-Gbit/s link in high-speed networking equipment at distances from 600-m to 12-km. Applications include routers, switches, add/drop multiplexers, and digital cross-connects.
