single +3.3V supply, dissipates less than 100mW of power for gigabit operation, and accepts, with proper input termination, either differential LVDS or PECL input levels. Engineered to provide the industry's highest level of integration for a laser driver, the S7011 is also the first solution to offer an output waveform that is tailored to the characteristics of VCSELs including automatic optical tail compensation, thus optimizing overall system performance. The S7011 is the first VCSEL driver design to incorporate a microcontroller interface on-chip that supports independent or multiple device control. This interface provides device operation status as well as external processor control of all chip functions. The microcontroller interface also permits automation of the manufacturing process and allows for easy and re-workable device configuration, thereby reducing the cost and increasing the ease of manufacture. This solution accommodates both open and closedloop architectures by offering programmable IMOD temperature compensation and by monitoring the average drive current through the laser diode to insure eye safety conditions. As a result of this configuration, the S7011 offers a compelling combination of flexibility, low power, smaller form factor, and cost reduction. See Figure 1 for a typical Fibre Channel/ Gigabit Ethernet application and Figure 2 for an S7011 block diagram.
